A new potentially hexadentate N2O4 Schiff base ligand, H2L derived from condensation reaction of an aromatic diamine and salicylaldehyde, and its metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, EI-MS, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra, as well as conductance measurements. It has been originated that the Schiff base ligand with Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions form mononuclear complexes on 1:1 (metal:ligand) stoichiometry. The conductivity data confirm the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. Also the crystal structures of the complexes [ZnL] and [CoL] have also been determined by using X-ray crystallographic technique. The Zn(II) and Co(II) complexes show a tetrahedral configuration. Electronic absorption spectra of the Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes suggest a square-planar geometry around the central metal ion. The synthesized compounds have antibacterial activity against the three Gram-positive bacteria: Bacillus cereus, Entero coccus faecalis and Listeria monocytogenes and also against the three Gram-negative bacteria: Salmonella paraB, Citrobacter freundii and Enterobacter aerogenes. The results showed that in some cases the antibacterial activity of complexes were more than nalidixic acid and amoxicillin as standards. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.en_US
