Friction Characteristics of Plasma-Nitrided H11 Steel

Abstract

Frictional characteristics of the engineering components, such as discs and dies for deformation processes have an important role on the life and cost of the parts manufactured by these processes. For this purpose, this study determines the friction behaviour of the plasma-nitrided H11 steel at disc-on-disc contact interaction. For this study, the disc shape samples were prepared from the test material and they were plasma-nitrided at two different treatment temperatures such as 500 degrees C and 550 degrees C.These samples were subjected to frictional tests conducted at different slip-ratios of 1.79, 10.53 and 22.22% under dry and lubricated conditions It is found that the frictional forces recorded for the samples plasma-nitrided at 550 degrees C are higher than those of the samples nitrided at 500 degrees C under conditions of the same loading, slip-ratio and dry friction. On the other hand, the frictional forces recorded in dry sliding for the all samples reduced by the slip-ratio applied in this study.
