Single crystals of N alpha-acetyl L-glutamic acid and N alpha-acetyl L-glutamine were gamma-irradiated and the paramagnetic species formed were investigated at room temperature by electron spin resonance technique. The observed species in N alpha-acetyl L-glutamic acid single crystal were attributed to the, HOOCCH2CH2(C) over dot(NHCOCH3)COOH radical; and those in N alpha-acetyl L-glutamine single crystal to the NH2COCH2CH2(C) over dot(NHCOCH3)COOH and NH2COCH2CH2CH(NHCOCH3)(C) over dot<(O)over bar OH> radicals. The g values and the hyperfine coupling constants of the unpaired electron with the environmental methylene, methine protons and N-14 nucleus were determined. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.en_US
