In this study we considered first if the conscious sedation could be successfully provided by rectal administration of 0.35 mg/kg midazolam when used for sedation of pediatric patients and the second, if the conscious sedation provided by this way could be enough for keeping the child to complete the examinations at CT and MRI area or not. Thirty pediatric patients (between 1-8 years old, ASA I-II class) were separated in to two randomized groups (Group CT and Group MRI). 0.35 mg/kg midazolam was administered by rectal route thirty minutes before the process. Mean arterial blood pressure (MBP), respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) and sedation scores were recorded at the minutes 0, 15, 30, 60 and 90. The adaptation of the patient to process and the complications were observed too. When compared with the initial dates, MBP, RR and SpO2 were significant lower in the minutes 15, 30, 60 and 90 in two groups (p<0.01, p<0.001 and p<0.001 respectively). Sedation levels in two groups were sleeping but responsive to verbal comments at the minute 30. The process was successfully carried out in Group CT than in Group MRI (p<0.01). The success rate in Group CT was 100%, in Group MRI was 67%. In conclusion 0.35 mg/kg rectal midazolam was considered to be enough for providing conscious sedation in pediatric patients. This conscious sedation could be convenient for keeping child silent to complete the examinations at CT procedures. But deeper sedation methods are required for MRI examinations.en_US
