İngilizlerin Kafkasya politikaları bağlamında Çerkezlere yönelik ilgileri: John Longworth örneği

Abstract

Kafkasya sahip olduğu jeo-stratejik konum nedeniyle, tarih boyunca pek çokdevletin hâkimiyet kurmaya çalıştığı bir yer olmuştur. 19. yüzyılda Rusya’nın,bölgede İngiltere’nin Doğu’daki çıkarlarını tehdit ederek yayılması, rahatsızlığaneden olmuştur. Bu nedenle İngiltere, Ruslara karşı bağımsızlık mücadelesiveren Çerkezlerle iş birliği yaparak Rusya’nın bölgede ilerleyişinin önünebir set çekmek istemiş ve Kafkasya’ya bazı ajanlar göndermiştir. Bunlardanbirisi de gazeteci John Longworth’tür. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Longworth’üneserinden yola çıkarak, İngilizlerin Çerkez topluluklarına yönelik ilgilerininnedenlerini ve Çerkezlerin, İngiltere’nin kendilerini himaye etmesi yönündekibeklentilerini ele alarak değerlendirmektir.

Given the geostrategically important location of Caucasia, many states aimed to establish their domination in the region. In fact, Russia’s expansion in the region threatened the interests of England in the East in the 19th century and caused great distress. Therefore, England aimed to put a barrier against the progress of Russia by collaborating with the Circassians and sending agents to the region. One such agent was the journalist John Longworth. Referring to the work of Longworth, this study aims to evaluate the reasons behind the interest of the English toward the Circassians and the expectations of the Circassians from England as a follower.
