The aim of this study is to examine the effects of the psychological state of adult
individuals on the meaning and purpose of life. A total of 320 adults participated in
the study. 164 of the participants are male and 156 of them are female individuals. In
the data collection process of the study, the Short Psychological Resilience Scale
(KPÖ-Smith et al. (2008), adapted to Turkish by Doğan (2015), a one-dimensional
scale with a 5-point Likert-type answer key, consisting of 6 items) was used. Meaning
and Purpose Scale (Developed by Aydın et al. (2015), consisting of 17 items, 11
positive and 6 negative, and 2 sub-dimensions in total. It is a 5-point Likert type) and
Personal Information Form were used. During the analysis of the data, Cronbach's
Alpha coefficients were estimated and interpreted to control the internal consistency
of the answers given to the scale items. Kolmogrov-Smirnov and Levene tests were
applied to control the assumptions of normality and homogeneity of variances of the
data obtained in the study. Student T test for two groups, One Way Analysis of
Variance or Kruskal Wallis H tests were used for three or more groups in order to
reveal the differences between the total scores obtained from the scales. According to
the results obtained from this study, the psychological resilience of men was found to
be higher than that of women (p<0.05). In the sub-dimension of the meaninglessness
of life and lack of purpose, the scores of the 26-35 age group and the 36 and over age
group were found to be significantly higher than the 18-25 age group (p<0.001).
Individuals who do sports professionally or nationally have higher psychological
resilience scores than individuals who do sports for health, who do not do sports, and
who do sports as amateurs (p<0.05). In the meaning and purpose of life sub-dimension,
it was determined that the mean scores of individuals who exercise 1-2 or 3-4 times a
week are significantly higher than those who do not exercise at all or who do 5 or more
exercises per week (p<0.05). According to the results of the study, individuals who do
sports at high levels have a high average of psychological resilience and individuals
who do sports on certain days of the week have a high average in the sub-dimension
of the meaning and purpose of life can be expressed as the benefits of regular sports.
Adults can be advised to do sports in a planned way on certain days of the week for a
healthy and meaningful life.
