Abstract

Internal urethral stricturotomy is one of widely used procedures in the treatment of urethral stricturotral strictures. We reviewed the records of 102 cases retrospectively in whom internal urethral stricturotomy was performed during the last six years in our clinic. The etiologic factors in our cases were external trauma (31%), prostatectomy (32%), urethral catheterization (81%) and urethroplasty operations (3%). The remaining 16% were accepted as idiopathic. Sixty-five percent of the strictures of our cases were localized at bulbous urethra. 23% at membranous urethra, 9% at prostatic urethra and 3% at penile urethra. All of the strictures were shorter than 2 cm in length. Satisfactory results were obtained in 58% of them after a single stricturotomy, in 17% after a second stricturotomy and in 13% after 3 or more stricturotomies. The remaining 5% of them were underwent urethroplasty operations and 7% were underwent endourethral prosthesis insertion. In conclusion, a total of 88% of satisfaction rate obtained in our cases suggests that internal urethral stricturotomy is still the treatment of choice in selected cases with urethral stricture.
